Your Guide To The Portable Hammer Mill
What in the world is a portable hammer mill? Likely when you think of a mill, you think of something such as bandsaw mills or a chainsaw mill. Those powerful devices are used to build big buildings, thanks to their ability to cut the lumber we use. But what does a hammer mill do? Surely you can't cut two-by-fours with a sledge hammer.
What Is A Portable Hammer Mill?
A portable hammer mill is something else entirely. Specifically, it's a machine designed to shred various materials into tiny, fine particles. There are many applications for the hammer mill. These include such things as milling grain, grinding shipping pellets into mulch, grinding dog food down into pellets for the dog to eat, milling grain into flour which is fed to livestock on a farm, and many other uses.
Other Uses
In fact, there other uses that are more associated with occupational settings than farm or rural settings. Some form of hammer mill, for instance, is used for shredding paper, producing fruit juice, shredding waste products, and even shredding scrap cars and trucks.
The Operation Process
The operating principle for a hammer mill is fairly simple. The mill is at its most basic level. Just a steel drum which contains either a horizontal or vertical rotating drum or shaft. Hammers are mounted on this drum. These hammers are either fixed to a central rotor or else are free to swing.
As the rotor spins at a super-fast speed inside the drum, the operator feeds the material into the feed hopper. The hammer bars impact against the material, causing it to become shredded. The now-shredded material then shoots through screens into a drum container.
Hammer Mill Horsepower
Hammer mills vary greatly by size, cost and the amount of horsepower required to operate them. For instance, there are some units that can be operated at a standard household on household current. On the other extreme, a large car shredder might require 2000 horsepower engines to power it.
The Screenless Hammer Mill
There's one other kind of hammer mill we should discuss. The screenless hammer mill, also comes in portable sizes. They use air flow to separate large particles from the smaller ones. It tends to be more reliable than other hammer mills and is also cheaper and uses less energy. As with other hammer mills, the screenless models are often used to pond grain.
The prices on hammer mills can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars for the portables, to several thousand for the larger ones.
Finding The Right Portable Hammer Mill
Although there are physical locations where you could get a portable hammer mill, you would be better off spending your time searching for one on the Internet. That's because these items are so specialized that you'll have to do a lot of traveling to find the right one if you're depending on local establishments. By searching online, you can find a much larger variety and you can usually get them at cheaper prices. Plus there will be no aggravation associated with spending all day out shopping and then never finding what you want.
